Why is your blog called Life After Bagels?

A few years ago I went to a personal trainer at the gym, he also talked to me about nutrition.  I was eating bagels with butter and cream cheese every single morning.  He told me to start eating toast and peanut butter.  I told him I would bite someone’s arm off by 9 am because that wouldn’t fill me.  I tried it, I was right, it didn’t fill me.  Flash forward to this June.  A new friend I met who does nutrition consultations came over to consult with me.  She told me the same thing, you can’t have bagels everyday.  Not because they were REALLY bad, but because my diet needed more variety.  She designed me a new eating plan and promised it would help keep me full in the morning.

Do you still eat bagels?

Okay yes . . . but not everyday, a couple times a month.  Everything in moderation right?  Brad says I’m a fraud.

Why are you a vegetarian?

Another guilty admission – Skinny Bitch.  I read it thinking it would be a cute read about eating right – it wasn’t.  It was a very graphic book about becoming vegan.  I knew I couldn’t be vegan because I love milk and cheese.  The book promised that you would feel better, so I thought “alright I’ll give this vegetarian thing a whirl”.  The only thing is – I didn’t really research anything or make dietary changes.  I just cut meat out and started eating more of the other stuff I already ate.  I did not end up feeling better, I felt worse.  So I stopped and didn’t think about it again for a year.  Then in the summer of 2008 I tried it again.  This time more informed and with more effort, and it stuck.  I’ve never felt better.

Is your boyfriend vegetarian?

No.  I do all the cooking and food prep in our house.  If I can easily make the meal in two versions I will (burgers, chicken / lentil loaf with veggies, etc.) then I will.  If I’m making an “all together dish” (pasta, curry, etc.) then he he eats vegetarian.  I usually don’t mind cooking meat, but I hate meat with bones, gives me the creeps.  Don’t worry, it’s an even trade for us – I do the cooking, he does the cleaning.

Why did you start blogging?

I fell in love with some awesome blogs and I couldn’t resist.  It keeps you accountable in your diet and exercise because you know you’re telling someone about it (kind of like a public journal).  To make new friends, it’s such a friendly community.  And for a really fun hobby that has nothing to do with work or school.

Do you count calories?

Nope, I just eat when I’m hungry.  I eat the best I possibly can.  I read ingredients instead, if they look okay, I’ll eat it.

How much do you exercise?

There’s no definite answer for this one.  I don’t have a schedule.  My workouts are either at the gym – weight training, or a run.  I’m really new at running.  You will hear a lot about how I’m doing in my posts.  I have to be very careful when I exercise since I have some serious joint problems that cause me pain very often.  I try to fit in at least 3 workouts a week in any combination of weight training or running or classes or cycling.

What are your favourite foods?

Bagels (hahaha), spaghetti and pasta of any kind, mild curry dishes, waffles and almond butter, roasted potatoes or sweet potatoes or cauliflower, those are some of the regulars.  I really love food a lot, although I am a picky eater.   The most favourite of all PIZZA PIZZA PIZZA.   My junk food weakness – chips.  Brad calls me a chip monster.  (The everything in moderation rule does not always apply to my chip or pizza intake.)

What is your size?

I’m about 5′ 3″ ish (a little shorter).  I usually weight 110lbs.  I have a very small frame.
