Now let’s get on to talking about DETOXing.  Last night I went to the Healthy Curators event about detoxing featuring Joyous Health (Joy McCarthy).  Joy was an absolutely wonderful speaker.  Who knew that talking about digestion could be so fun :P .  There was also some awesome food!

I’ve never really done a detox, in fact the word brings to mind some very extreme diet practices.  Joy talked about incorporating detox practices into your daily life and you don’t need to do some of the more extreme detoxes or cleanses.

Here are the detox super foods she recommended:

  • Lemon and water (ohhh yaaaaa, I’m already going it!)
  • Beets
  • Cruciferous vegetables (kale, broccoli, cauliflower, arugula, brussels sprouts, cabbage)
  • Chia seeds
  • Fermented foods (kombucha, miso, sauerkraut, kefir, kimchi)
  • Green tea
  • Apples
  • Turmeric

And we got a jug of Greens+ to take home, woohoooo.  Greens+ has been a favourite of Brad’s for a super long time, he was excited to see it.

I’m going to explore this whole detox practice intermingled in your regular diet thing.  I shall report my friends, oh yes I shall report.  In the meantime …

Have you ever done a detox or cleanse?  What kind?  How your results?  Are you curious about detoxing?

  1. I am currently mid-detox/cleanse. It’s not a “true cleanse” I guess because I am eating dinner (organic lean protein and greens). I’m on my second of 3 days. Felt fine yesterday. Not sure that I will make it through tomorrow. I cannot imagine how people do it with all juice for 3-5 or more days.

  2. I have never detoxed before but was pleasantly surprised to see that I already use a lot of the detoxing foods you mentioned!

  3. Hey Morgan! I did the Isagenix 9-day cleanse last year and lost 13 lbs. It was challenging the first 3 days or so, but after that I felt like I had a ton of energy and I felt lighter and more alert. Its a great cleanse because you still eat and everything, but you have “cleanse days” where you’re just supposed to drink the powder they give you with water…I was very hangry on those days lol…then I found out that you can have a green salad or bean salad for lunch on those days and that would have made a huge difference.

I’ve heard a lot about detox and cleanses but I just don’t think I’m hardcore enough to try them. Eating well is sometimes challenge enough imo!

Looking forward to the Twitter chat though!

I’m gearing up to start a detox/cleanse on Saturday. It’s been a long time since I’ve done any sort of cleanse and this one will be very different. The last cleanse I did was probably about 2 years ago and it was Kathy Freston’s 30 day program. No gluten, no coffee and no booze, nothing white… I was already eating vegan. This time I’m doing a juice feast. I need to reset… too many cocktails and too much coffee. I’m starting on a Saturday, expecting to rest and treat myself kindly for the first few days. I eat a whole food diet already and lots of vegetables, but I want to quickly reset my system so I’m choosing a juice feast. I’m shooting for 7 days. I’ve never done anything like this and I’m a little nervous.. but mostly excited!

  6. I have never done a detox before but lately they seem like the “in” thing to do. I have seen many bloggers do them lately. I think I would stick to all natural foods rather than the drinks especially because I would rather eat than drink my nutrients

  7. In my opinion, detox shouldn’t be a 1 week or 1 month things but something continuous. Just eat really healthy so that there isn’t all that garbage in your system that you need to detox ;) Drinking a green smoothie or water+lemon to start off the day sounds much better then doing crazy things like juice fasts.

  8. I just finished an elimination detox with Meghan Telpner (blog: Making Love in the Kitchen) and I loved it. I have done it a few times actually, last year was my first round doing it. I love it because it basically removes all common allergens one day at a time. Then the core of the detox removes grains, beans/legumes etc one day at a time until you get to one full juice/smoothie day. This is the only type of detox that I would ever do. No funny pills/mixes/powders, it uses whole foods that you can find in any grocery store.

The one thing I do to cleanse every single day is hot lemon cayenne water in the morning before I consume anything. It’s the only way my body will ‘eliminate’ if you know what I mean ;) (TMI??) I also consume a lot of chia seeds and am getting into kombucha, water kefir and sauerkraut a lot more.

  9. My life is a detox! :) Seriously. I don’t touch wheat, dairy, gluten, sugar, soy & nuts EVER! I don’t even eat fruit because it’s too high in sugar. People ask me all the time why I do this, well my body actually cannot process these foods… And I actually kind of see this as a blessing in disguise since a lot of these “food groups” are not the healthiest (minus the nuts… but I know if I could eat them, I would eat FAR TOO MANY, lol).

I think it’s smart to have a detox day, and then have a normal, healthy eating day, full of healthy fats, proteins and carbs, it helps regulate your body and clean things out!

  10. Alissa says:

I have been slowing adding the detox foods to my lifestyle, and am interested in doing a detox once life settles down a little. What is Greens+ and how do you use it? Thank you!
