I blinked on Friday and woke up and it was Monday morning. Yup it’s been THAT kind of weekend. It was also Bradley’s birthday.
Since Brad has been working soooooo much overtime we had a pile of stuff to do for the weekend. It didn’t matter that it was his birthday on Saturday, he charged us full steam ahead through a million tasks. Most of them were backyard focused.
On Saturday we picked up seedlings at the market, cut the lawn, laid grass seed, bought a bbq (his bday present), and bought what seemed like 800 lbs of soil.
On Sunday we woke up bright and early and hit the road for a 55 km ride. It was our last long ride before our Ride for Heart on Sunday. I had 65 k planned but had to cut it short with a pulled muscle. The pull is so bad that it’s bruised the skin on top. I thought that was an urban legend. I’ve heard that you can pull a muscle so bad it bruises but I’ve never seen it. Leave it to me to prove it’s truthfulness. I think my doctor hates me. I have an appointment at noon, let’s see what he says.
I’ve had a tonne of fun training, and I’ve seen so many parts of Toronto that I hadn’t seen before.
I have promised Brad that I would not sign us up for anything new for a very long time. I’m always getting us into something (most recently the 5k and the ride) and we need to rest. We’d like to get back to some good ol strength training and lifting.
But speaking of NOT resting. After our ride on Sunday we got back to the garden. Brad assembled the new bbq and we planted our veggies.
I think I tripled my total vegetable garden area from last year.
Here are the vegetables I’m hoping to harvest this year:
- cherry tomatoes
- beefsteak tomatoes
- purple peppers
- radish
- carrots
- bush beans
- green onions
- kale
- lettuce
- spinach
- dill
- mint
- oregano
- thyme
- basil
- parsley
- 2 mystery plants
We got two seedlings from the market that we don’t know what they are. They could potentially be broccoli, not because they look like broccoli but because I asked for broccoli and it was the only thing I didn’t seem to have in my other seedling supply. I’m looking forward to see what the heck develops out of these two mystery plants.
Who’s planted seeds or seedlings for veggies this year? Do you have a veggie garden, what type (raised bed, ground, container)? Any first time gardeners this year?

Looks great! My garden is mostly filled with cherry tomatoes, hot peppers and some herbs.
Did you plant the mint in its own pot? It smells and tastes great but is actually a weed that will take over everything if it can.
oh yes! Actually I think the reason we have the mint is because it was taking over my boyfriend’s boss’s garden and she was trying to get rid of some … I have two pots of mint and they’re separate from everything else
I’d love to have a vegetable garden but, living in NYC, our space is a wee bit limited. Luckily we do have a balcony and planted some tomatoes last year. My boys were so excited to watch and see things grow! You’ve inspired me and maybe we’ll have to do it again this year.
yes you should definitely do it … you could try a few herbs too, they’re fairly easy and resilient – I wish I had tried to do it when I lived in an apt … my balcony was glass so there would have been enough light too
After 10 years of living on our sailboat, and having the occasional basil plant there, we are now in an apartment with a huge balcony..so I am growing herbs, Chinese veggies, tomatoes, lettuce, and flowers. Loving having a garden again, even a small one.
that’s awesome … much better than I ever did with a balcony, I’m very spoiled now with a rental unit with a backyard
I have no business trying to grow plants of any kind. All I seem to do is kill them. I don’t know how I do it either. With my basil last year, it was doing so well and then I came home one day and it was all shriveled and dead. It was pretty heartbreaking.
sounds like it needs more water?
We are urban gardeners too!
Although living in Vancouver, our growing season is too short for tomatoes (what I miss most about not living in southern Ontario any more). We plant lots of seedling greens; swiss chard, kale, arugula, butter lettuce and spinach and feast on green salads fresh from the garden until late September. Much tastier than store-bought and free!
Enjoy!
Very cool! My dogs eat absolutely everything in the backyard…I’d be lucky if the flowers lasted a day lol
Those cupcakes are making me drool!
the garden looks great! I love the planter box. I believe we have decided not to do any outdoor stuff this year, just focus on getting the inside of our new place in order before we start thinking about the balcony.
