Whirlwind

I blinked on Friday and woke up and it was Monday morning.  Yup it’s been THAT kind of weekend.  It was also Bradley’s birthday.

Since Brad has been working soooooo much overtime we had a pile of stuff to do for the weekend.  It didn’t matter that it was his birthday on Saturday, he charged us full steam ahead through a million tasks.  Most of them were backyard focused.

On Saturday we picked up seedlings at the market, cut the lawn, laid grass seed, bought a bbq (his bday present), and bought what seemed like 800 lbs of soil.

On Sunday we woke up bright and early and hit the road for a 55 km ride.  It was our last long ride before our Ride for Heart on Sunday.  I had 65 k planned but had to cut it short with a pulled muscle.  The pull is so bad that it’s bruised the skin on top.  I thought that was an urban legend.  I’ve heard that you can pull a muscle so bad it bruises but I’ve never seen it.  Leave it to me to prove it’s truthfulness.  I think my doctor hates me.  I have an appointment at noon, let’s see what he says.

I’ve had a tonne of fun training, and I’ve seen so many parts of Toronto that I hadn’t seen before.

I have promised Brad that I would not sign us up for anything new for a very long time.  I’m always getting us into something (most recently the 5k and the ride) and we need to rest.  We’d like to get back to some good ol strength training and lifting.

But speaking of NOT resting.  After our ride on Sunday we got back to the garden.  Brad assembled the new bbq and we planted our veggies.

I think I tripled my total vegetable garden area from last year.

Here are the vegetables I’m hoping to harvest this year:

  • cherry tomatoes
  • beefsteak tomatoes
  • purple peppers
  • radish
  • carrots
  • bush beans
  • green onions
  • kale
  • lettuce
  • spinach
  • dill
  • mint
  • oregano
  • thyme
  • basil
  • parsley
  • 2 mystery plants

We got two seedlings from the market that we don’t know what they are.  They could potentially be broccoli, not because they look like broccoli but because I asked for broccoli and it was the only thing I didn’t seem to have in my other seedling supply.  I’m looking forward to see what the heck develops out of these two mystery plants.

Who’s planted seeds or seedlings for veggies this year?  Do you have a veggie garden, what type (raised bed, ground, container)?  Any first time gardeners this year?
