Once upon a time it was July 2009. I had decided to revamp my eating and that needed some research. My research brought me to Self Magazine’s Eat Like Me Blog. The funny part is I didn’t even know it was a “blog” per se . . . because I didn’t know what a blog was. Then I realized that people that were commenting on it. That’s how I found Jenna from Eat Live Run. Then I found Caitlin from Healthy Tipping Point. Then I realized that the whole world was my blog oyster (ironic since I’m vegetarian.)
But lately I haven’t had much time to read blogs. In fact my google reader is over at my other email account and I’m always logged into my morgan.shuker account. I justify it with “oh gosh who has time to read blogs anymore anyways?” So I feel better. But then I remember that I LOVE reading blogs. Just this week I’ve recalled why I loved reading blogs in the first place . . .
IDEAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MEAL IDEAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Like Fannetastic Food’s Mexican Brown Rice Casserole that I made last night.
Blogs are awesome ways to share recipes. They’re also awesome ways to find food inspiration. I had never put pumpkin in anything before I read blogs. Now I put pumpkin in everything.
Check out my Sunday night pumpkin curry.
- 1/3 cup chopped onion
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil
- 1 can coconut milk
- 1/3 cup water
- 1 cup pumpkin
- 3 large carrots
- 1 medium size zucchini
- 1 can navy beans
- 2 tablespoons of curry powder (Thanks Preena!)
Saute onion in oil until soft. Add coconut milk, water and the rest of the ingredients. Cook until carrots are soft and the sauce thickens (mine took 45 minutes.) Then serve over brown rice.
Another tip I learned on blogs: make things ahead! You know I love a good time management tip. Meghan from Making Love In The Kitchen taught me to cook a big pot of grains. This huge pot of rice was enough for my curry dish and my casserole.
What is the reason that you read blogs? What’s the best recipe or tip you ever found on a blog?

I like to read blogs that give me insight into a person. So, besides friends’ blogs, I heart postsecret.com and hyperboleandahalf.com because of their unique perspectives and emotional vibrancy!
Great post — ditto on all of the above. What I learn from blogs? Healthy eating, mixing up the workouts, sharing successes and confessions…. And it’s been nice to know that I’m not alone with even the humble little things I’m trying to do to be a bit healthier. Thanks for sharing!
I like to read blogs for the ideas on everything from meals to workouts, for the support and motivation, and simply for the friendships I have made.
I used to be very active in an online forum for Oxygen magazine. I actually originally met Lisa (I’m An Okie) and Julie (PB Fingers) there years ago. Then, they both started blogs. I had never heard of blogs. When I started reading theirs I discovered others. I MUCH preferred the mindset and healthy attitude found in blogs over the forum so I made the switch and started my own not too long after.
I started reading healthy living blogs because it was an outlet for me to understand how others choose to live a healthy lifestyle. It’s really helped motivate me in my daily life and I am now able to express myself through my blog in what I choose to eat and how I choose to work out.
I started reading blogs because I was looking for vegetarian and vegan recipes and I wanted to find there were people making changes in their lives I could connect with no matter what time of the day.
you’ll be happy to know that your blog was recommended to me and I’ve been a faithful reader since…;)
I started reading healthy living blogs when I finally realized it was time to get healthy!
I’m racking my brain trying to figure out how it all started, but I can’t seem to remember! I think I may have seen a blog in a magazine as well. Then I found numerous other blogs and I was hooked!
I agree that blogs are a great source of foodie inspiration! There are so many meals that I wouldn’t even have considered had it not been for blogs!
How funny, I made a similar casserole last Friday and it was inspired by another blogger, Elise from Hungry Hungry Hippie. I love getting recipes and ideas from blogs. Great post!
I love reading period. So whether it’s a blog, book, or magazine I want to read it. I don’t have the time to read as often as I would like and I think transferring my google reader list to the account where I prefer to comment from has helped a lot.
And if I didn’t read blogs I wouldn’t be addicted to curry like I am now. You had a post about making curry with chickpeas and broccoli and that brought about me making curry about 3 nights out of the week for me to eat. Thank You for the yummo!
I started reading blogs for the exact same reason!!
I love getting inspiration from everyone, and certain blogs (like yours) I’ve come to actually get excited about reading new content from and hearing about your lives. I surprise myself some days, when I open my Google Reader and I’ve got 200+ new posts, and think “ugh, XXX posted 10 new posts this week, how can I get through all of these?” but then the next thing I know I’ve read them all! haha. I’ve started to remove blogs from my reader that I don’t get downright excited about, and keeping those instead on a link list so I can check those when I have time, but focus my energy reading the blogs I reaaaaally love
I hope you liked the casserole! Blogs are awesome for new ideas – that’s why I love them, too.
p.s. that pumpkin curry sounds awesome – although I think you left out the pumpkin in the ingredients list?! lol
I made Fannetastic Food’s Mexican Brown Rice Casserole after she posted it too! So yummy.
Ideas, recipes, inspiration and motivation are the reasons I love blog reading.
I love blogs for the sense of community. Yeah, the recipes are awesome, but having friends with similar passions – albeit ones on the other side of the country – sure is awesome!
I read mostly vegan / fitness blogs for meal ideas (I’m a new vegan) and for some training insight. I have learned so much about cooking (at the age of 45!!!) from reading blogs. I have hundreds of vegan recipes stored in Google Docs. I always can turn to it for a great vegan breakfast, lunch or dinner. That’s why I love reading blogs!
I read blogs for the recipes and ideas and inspiration. But I continue reading them because of the relationships. I think its amazing how much people you’ve never met can mean to you. Thats why I love it.
Ummm . . . I dont see pumpkin in the ingredients for your pumpkin curry. I was SUPER confused about that one for a minute!
I started reading blogs when I started reading yours…and I use your links to read others. That’s how I found Meg Ruffmans the other night and found out how to diy a tin backsplash and where to order the tin tiles….and I’m definitely going to try that rice dish….looks delicious!
The same thing happened for me. I was doing some research on changing up my diet and incorporating healthier foods when I found Kaths blog.
I love the ideas and constant motivation I get to stay healthy from reading them all still.
